The following is an e-mail that
Ben received on March 2, 2004 from Ray Penny about a speech he gave in
Fayetteville, North Carolina the previous fall. Mr. Stein,
I wanted to take this chance to say thank you for what you said the the
Oklahoma State University students that came to hear you speak last fall.
(you may remember my friend Ben and I. we're the bums that drove to
Fayetteville to see you and Mr. Franken debate.) What you said about the
value of family has revolutionized my home life. I have taken it upon myself
to rebuild my relationship with my parents, and they have followed the cue,
and done so with their parents too. Your advice reached many more people
than you know.
All of this is especially of value today. my grandpa is on his deathbed.
Doctors have given him only days, and my dad has flown to California to be
with him in his final moments. It is a bittersweet moment. Grandpa has lived
a
full and valued life. He fought in Korea and WWII, and raised my dad and his
brother to be successful men. Grandpa has had an impact on my life in
tremendous ways.
Thank you so much for your words. I will do my best to pass them on. They
could not have come a moment too soon.
I hope you are well, and that your life is blessed.
I am forever grateful,
-Ray Penny |
